Shrinking on Space, Saving on Price…

When it comes to price, affordable trumps cheap. No one wants a cheap house, but we would all likely say that we wanted an affordable house. Well the “affordable housing task force” takes this precise mission very seriously. Recently, their cost-saving measure included, well, small measurements.

The thought is, that if they reduce the size of city streets for new developments, these thinners roadways will lessen the overall price point with reduced land costs, and as such, homes will come with a thinner price tag attached to it. The idea for thin streets was one of seven winners of a city contest aimed at generating new, holistic ideas for more affordable housing.

The proposed areas are the underused streets in Marpole, the West End and Grandview-Woodland narrower. City counsel believes these are the best areas fit for affordable housing.

The aim is to create 10,000 affordable new homes for both buyers and renters, and if approved, the pilot project will focus the above mentioned areas which are close to the SkyTrain and significant bus routes. I guess public transit and affordable housing go hand-in-hand. Hmm.

What does that mean for people looking to buy in the more rural areas outside of Vancouver such as, White Rock, Surrey and Langley? For now, it’s only the city folk whose streets will be going on a diet for that thinner, more affordable appeal. But we will likely see the same trend approach as the cost of spacious housing is out of reach for a lot of families out in here in the wide-open spaces of Langley, Surrey and White Rock.

Hopefully your visitors, who require roadway parking and are not transit-takers, will have the same diet plan for their SUV’s. Smart cars need only visit these communities!
