Canada Day – Get Your Celebration On

June 17, 2013 | By

Canada Day in the Fraser ValleyCanada Day is just around the corner, and if you’re like most laid-back mainlanders I know, you likely find your fun on the-day-of.

This year, in order to help facilitate your celebrations, I thought perhaps I could offer up some ideas in advance.

Here are some events I’ve had the pleasure of attending …and you might find them worth a try as well!

If you’re from “the valley” and you have never made your way onto Granville Island …you’re missing out! This is one of my favourite stops in Vancouver, and on Canada Day – Granville Island offers a huge Canada Day celebration that includes a parade, a pancake breakfast, an official Canada Day ceremony, live jazz, performers, and MELA!, a South Asian cultural fair. It runs from 8am – Midnight …so if you have never been, this might be your year to check it out!

Or, head to Canada Place – the host of Downtown Vancouver’s biggest Canada Day celebration. I’ve attended this Waterfront Party many-a-time and enjoyed their live music and entertainment, while watching the annual Canada Day Parade.

This is also the #3 spot for an amazing fireworks display along the Burrard Inlet, which are air-born between 10:30pm-11pm. The waterfront party starts at 10am and runs until 6pm; Parade starts at 7pm.

I’ll be there …stop by and say hello!

For those who wish to stay in the valley, Surrey’s Canada Day celebration is both the biggest Canada Day event in western Canada, and one of the biggest outdoor concerts in BC. And it’s all FREE! In addition, they have a fireworks display as well.

Come. See. Enjoy.

So for those of you who say we never celebrate like the American’s do for their 4th of July …try taking in one of these events and prove yourself wrong. We can get our fun on just as much as our neighbours to the South!
